Album Review: NOLAN – P.S.

P.S. by NOLAN - Artwork

Detroit rapper & beatmaker NOLAN (f.k.a Nolan The Ninja) is easily one of the more underrated artists in Hip-Hop. Best known for his 2019 hit “Oranges,” which he performed on COLORS, NOLAN is back with his latest project P.S.

Perhaps his most charismatic release to date, P.S. is a riveting display of NOLAN’s growth as an Emcee and talent for production. At 33 mins, NOLAN makes the most of every second. NOLAN does an excellent job of not forcing hooks. This unorthodox approach plays a big role in what makes P.S. such a cohesive and well put together project with great pacing, transitions, and flow.

P.S. opens with Fiona Apple’s 1997 VMA acceptance speech for Best New Artist on also… a fitting intro for the underdog theme that recurs throughout the album. The lead single, glow 1.5, is one of the more introspective cuts from the project. Where the track lacks in energy, NOLAN makes up for in his songwriting as he contemplates his past decisions and being underrated by his peers. broken combs has a sound with production reminiscent of Big Pun’s the classic hit Deep Cover. NOLAN’s ferocious approach to the track make it a highlight on the project. Other standouts include carte blanche, dial / noodle, and the Homeboy Sandman-featured kool.

The smooth jazzy production throughout the album is absolutely stunning to hear and are a large part in what makes P.S. such an enjoyable listen. The samples used were expertly curated and NOLAN takes full advantage delivering elite-level rhymes. P.S. is another terrific outing from the Detroit native, released via Substream Records.
