PJ Morton, BJ The Chicago Kid, Kenyon Dixon & Charlie Bereal Share “Bring It On Home to Me”

PJ Morton joins forces with BJ The Chicago KidKenyon Dixon and guitarist Charlie Bereal for a special tribute to Sam Cooke, and their shared love of Leslie Odom Jr.‘s Oscar-nominated portrayal in One Night in Miami. From a Los Angeles motel room, united by seamless harmonies and a dapper set of suits, a brand new music video shows the four artists delivering their own soul-stirring rendition of Cooke’s classic, “Bring It On Home to Me.” Directed by James McShane, the performance evokes the energy of Regina King’s film as the singers honor both the formative influence of Sam Cooke, and a movie that has meant a lot to them this past year.

PJ Morton and BJ The Chicago Kid have long been close friends and frequent collaborators, and they originally recorded “Bring It On Home to Me” as a duet for one of BJ’s new projects. Right after they had the idea to add Kenyon Dixon as a third voice, Leslie Odom Jr. earned the Academy Award nomination for playing Sam Cooke. They were so excited about it that they decided to film the video, pay homage and put the song out early.

Like Sam Cooke, PJ Morton is a preacher’s kid whose music career began in the church, before becoming a leading voice of R&B and soul, the founder of his own record label and more. Last month, Morton won his third GRAMMY Award in three straight years, this time for Best Gospel Album (Gospel According to PJ). He also honored Marvin Gaye at both the GRAMMYs Premiere Ceremony and the inaugural celebration of the GRAMMYs Black Music Collective. He has recently appeared on American Idol, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, the TODAY Show, the Soul Train Awards, Song Exploder and NPR’s Tiny Desk (for the second time). In addition to working on his next album, PJ Morton is currently serving as Dillard University’s first-ever artist in residence, where he will lead masterclasses, internships and talent showcases throughout the spring and fall semesters.
