Hip-hop artist White Dave (born Noah David Coogler) released the video for “Odor,” the third song off his new EP Porch Sessions, out now. Highlighting a 4/20 celebration among friends, the video was shot at various locations around the Bay Area (White Dave’s hometown) including Mt. Davidson and Grandview Park in San Francisco and Joaquin Miller Park in Oakland.
Porch Sessions is White Dave’s fourth consecutive 4/20 record in celebration of the smoker’s holiday and a follow up to 2020’s The Great Richmond Bake Off EP. Comprised of five anthemic tracks, the rap exhibition showcases White Dave’s versatility and knack at blending memorable beats with gorgeous instrumentation. In conjunction with the debut of his EP, White Dave released a companion music video for the second track on the record, “Hotel Motel,” which follows him dancing through a variety of surreal backdrops. With a spirit of individuality that permeates his work, White Dave creates music that pushes the creative envelope and has been featured in critically acclaimed major motion pictures such as Black Panther (“Nervous”) and Creed (“Intolerant”),and most recently on Judas and the Black Messiah: The Inspired Album (“Appraise”). In addition to these tracks, his catalog includes an impressive three full-length albums, five EPs, and 15+ singles in the last four years.
Regarding his moniker, White Dave: Growing up in Richmond, CA, he encountered obstacles at school with peers teasing him for not being ‘Black’ enough, hurling slights like ‘Oreo,’ and ‘Carlton Banks’ his way. “When you’re confident in yourself,” he learned, “you make other people uncomfortable.” The experience also informs his moniker. “Ryan gave me my rap name,” says White Dave” referring to his older brother, award-winning film producer and director Ryan Coogler who encouraged him to reclaim the “white label” that had been hurled at him years earlier, and transform it into something valuable — a conversation starter that would generate interest but still represent him. He grounded it by adding his middle name. So no, White Dave isn’t white. The moniker is just an extension of the proudly Black Noah David Coogler.
White Dave is currently in the studio working on his next full-length LP, expected to be released later this year.
